EVS: joint venture for fostering social inclusion, active participation and solidarity - KAAREL LUGUS - 6 MONTHS EVS IN SICILY - English Article!

Sicily, sweet Sicily.

My idea to go to EVS came out of nowhere, i just were sitting on my bed one day and started to think about my life. After few hours of hard brain activity i found out that i need some changes in my life and the idea was to go to other country to see other culture and lifestyle.

So i started to search the almighty internet for different organisations that are sending people to EVS projects. After a while i found a MTÜ Noored Ühiskonna heaks.
I was super happy because i had a change to be in there training course one year before and i knew the people in that organisation. I contacted the organisation and we had a meeting where they said that there is a possibility to go to Sicily for a half year EVS project. After that i had a skype conversation with the hosting organisation from Sicily and everything went good. I were finally accepted to EVS project!

Few weeks later i had all my stuff packed, got my plane tickets and all the information that i needed thanks to sending organisation.

The day my life changed...

I got on the plane in Estonia and had all the good wishes and hugs and kisses with me to go see the world!
So few hours later i land in Sicily, Palermo airport, got my luggage and started to go to my hostel where i had to stay one night, but it was not so easy that i was expecting. It was already 20.00 when i came off the airplane so the bus line from airport to city center did not work anymore, so i took a taxi and got off in front of my hostel what was already closed. After a hour thanks to the hosting organisation i got to my room and went for the first walk in Sicily, Palermo. It was so nice awesome and at the same time little bit scary.
Next day i found my bus station and took a bus to the city that i had to meet my hosting organisation - Mussomeli!

First impression...

I came off the bus in Mussomeli and the first person i saw where the president of the organisation, Jose, who was just the perfect personality and from that day on i knew we well get along just perfect. They showed me my room and all the house where we should live and work. It was just perfect! The city was small but at the same time it was just perfect and calm and friendly place that i imagined to be!

Few weeks later..

When i was feeling that everything is perfect and all the people i was surrounded where good i started to feel distance from my family and from my friends but all that you need is a PC and Skype and my feelings got better. So i realized that whoever you are and whereever you are don't matter if you have good friend and people around you who are supporting you!

My weeks in Sicily and activities..

Our group main activities where to teach English in schools to students, help to build to local green parks to look nicer and to make local projects.. and this was just perfect for me and i enjoyed all of it.

My main problem...

When we had group meeting and we where discussing about what we where learning, where i always found that i didn't learn something new, until i got back to Estonia and every month i found something new about myself that i learned in EVS and realize it now.

EVS changes lifes!

Inclusion with Disadvantage Youth with Art Youth Exchange - INTERVIEW WITH REILI LEHIS

Name of the project: “Inclusion with Disadvantage Youth with Art”
Date: 23rd until 30th January 2017
Country/City: Usak, Turkey

What was the main topic of the event?

The main topic of the youth exchange was “Inclusion with Disadvantage Youth with Art”. The aims of the project were:
- create awareness among young people about inclusion and discrimination;
- promote art and use as a tool of participation young people:
- to increase the participation of young people with using their creativity;
- increasing the visibility of Eramus+ program in Ušak and increasing the participation of local youth to such programs.
During the project we were supposed to implement workshops on the topic of inclusion and do outside activities related to art (painting, music and dance) and flashmobs to create local awareness.

Estonian group had to admit that the actions and workshops promised in the schedule were not fully arranged. During the first days we focused on getting to know one another and made a few interesting group works and assignments about the topics of inclusion, empowerment, disadvantages and discrimination. Getting to know each other is always fascinating - participants from Estonia, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, United Kingdom and Greece bonded quickly and this was the basis of the group works being interesting, fulfilling and fun.

Unfortunately we did not focus on the methods and ideas of the inclusion through art nor did we implement the workshops for painting and creating flashmobs outside. Fortunately we had some very talented people among the participants who entertained us and helped our whole group to include each other with their singing, dancing and playing an instrument.

What was the biggest learning moments on the event for you?

The biggest learning moment was to learn patience and the art of going with the flow. In Estonia we are so used to everything happening on time and according to the schedule. Since there were many uncertainties and change of plans throughout the weeklong project, instead of giving up or being frustrated we chose to have fun, accept the changes and go with the flow. Sometimes letting go can help you to make the best of something.

Another learning moment is about people – even if we did not fully focus on the project topic, it was still so much fun and we could learn plenty from other participants’ ideas, country, culture and talents.

In conclusion, being open-minded, accepting surprises and uncertainty, and going with the flow helps us to be more creative, learn more and connect to people.

With not many tourists visiting, local people in Usak mostly do not speak English, so shopping in the bazaars and little shops helped us develop the skills of body language and being more creative for understanding each other.

Do you have any plans to continue active in the field? If yes, what?

In this case the plan to continue in the field should be introducing ourselves the theories of inclusion of disadvantaged youth with art.

Brief introduction to the theory of inclusion and discrimination was interesting and made us think that art, in its different variations, really is a good and effective way to include young people to social activities and show themselves in the community.

Would you recommend it to your friends? I yes, why? If not, why not?

I would definitely recommend taking part of Erasmus+ projects. Participating in projects is a perfect opportunity to share ideas, find friends from around Europe, introduce your own country in the best way possible to get people interested in coming to Estonia and learn or practice language skills.

Another interesting thing is that these projects can take place in any city and this is how you can visit a place you would otherwise never visit  – for example this project took place in Ušak, Turkey, which is about 500 km from Istanbul – for Turks it is a small city, with 500 000 people. For us it was a way to walk in this city as locals and observe the everyday life of local people.

During the project you can find out more about the mindsets, customs and talents because all the participants spend their time together doing group works and assignments during the daytime and having fun, dancing and singing in the evening.

After the project, our hearts are filled with joy and admiration – how lucky are we do meet all these inspiring and amazing people. Together we experienced interesting and chaotic days that will be in our memories forever.

The group was composed by Reili Lehis, Hedi Teidearu, Renata Lukk, Kadi Käsner and Kristel Sarapuu.

Conflict Transformation through Culture Training Course - INTERVIEW WITH ELISA KIVILA, CHRIZTI TINT AND INGA ULM

Name of the project: Conflict Transformation through Culture: Intercultural Conflict Management in Youth Work
Date: 18.01.2017 - 25.01.2017
Country/City:Turkey/Istanbul

What was the main topic of the event?
Elisa Kivila - The main topic of the event was to learn about the characteristics of knowledge of intercultural conflict management approach, to develop new perspectives by experiencing cultural differences, needs, values and positions. In addition, to integrate the intercultural conflict management approach into fields where they work in order to transform conflicts in the youth field.
Chrizti Tint - Main topic was how to manage conflicts in youth work.
Inga Ulm - Conflict transformation through culture.

What was the biggest learning moments on the event for you?
Elisa Kivila - One of the biggest learning moments was definitely learning about other culture and countries’ problems from people all over Europe. As we had a lot of workshops with groups, we learned a lot about main concerns in different countries. In addition to that, I also liked that we had to analyze ourselves and how we act in conflict situation. That helped us to understand our strengths and weaknesses during conflicts and how to use them. Also, we experienced how diverse are peoples’ points of view on the same topic and how differently they deal with these situations and find solutions.
Chrizti Tint - I learned a lot about different countries and about myself also.
Inga Ulm - Realizing, what kind of problems are there in different countries/cultures and how they are created, what can be the root problem.
Learning, how different people are, their mindset, world view and background. Together we can create much more than alone. Also, if you have friends in different countries, you are much more tolerable to anything that happens in the world and understanding, why some people act as they do.

Do you have any plans to continue active in the field? If yes, what?
Elisa Kivila - I think that conflict management could be really useful for everyone, in spite of what your major/occupation is, because in everyday life we challenge conflicts with other people as well as with ourselves. In the future I would like to be involved with similar trainings for sure.
Chrizti Tint - I am sure that I will continue doing different projects and make new friends/contacts because if you do it once, you can’ stop anymore.
Inga Ulm - Might happen yes, because during the project I realized that meeting with all those people, facilitating and having discussions about this kind of important topics can be something I am passionate about

Would you recommend it to your friends? I yes, why? If not, why not?
Elisa Kivila - I would and I will definitely recommend these kind of projects to my friends. It seems quite unbelievable how much can you learn in a week from different people with different backgrounds, cultures, experiences, etc. The trainers have really good ways to bring work and fun together, so basically you get smarter while you are having fun J Also, it is a great way to visit some other country and learn about its culture.
Chrizti Tint - Certainly I will recommend participate in these kinds of projects, it was life-changing experience for me.
Inga Ulm - Definitely, because only like that you can understand how the world is functioning, what the most important values in your life are and what it means to have a real friend in another country. This kind of projects are perfect for developing you step by step, improving social skills and gaining knowledge.

More comments or anything else you would like to share? You can add here in your own language, if you want!
Elisa Kivila - In general I really liked the whole concept of the project – all the 36 participants who attended were amazing, the trainers, organizers of the projects were great, of course the training itself was useful and interesting and Istanbul is a really magical city. Also, I have to mention all the workshops, simulation games and role plays that made the training even more exciting and fun! I would really recommend these projects to everyone – it is a good way to make friends all over the world and as they say that you know it’s a great story when it starts off with “When I was on Erasmus +….”
Inga Ulm - It was one of the best experiences I have had so far. It made me see my own country and the world from another perspective and gave me lots of ideas, thoughts about what I want to do further in my life.

An EVS and Beyond! - MARJU MESCHIN - 4 MONTHS EVS IN FRANCE - English and Estonian Article!

EVS in France

My EVS took place in Amiens, a picturesque town in northern France. The project – EVS and Beyond – lasted for 4 months from September to December and ended up being one of the most worthwhile experiences of my life.

There were 12 other participants in the project, all from different countries of the EU. In that, EVS and Beyond was special – never before had our receiving organisation (Info Point Europe Direct Picardie) hosted such a large group. The other volunteers were from Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Finland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark, Cyprus and Greece. The reason for gathering such a large group was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the EVS. The main objective of the project was promotion of European mobility in the region of Hauts-de-France.

Most of September was spent with preparations for interventions in schools, getting used to the town and life in Amiens, signing up and attending French classes in the Université de Picardie Jules Verne etc. We also started preparations for various other events to come, namely for Ze Dictee – a dictation event for students to celebrate the European Day of Languages and to promote foreign language learning in schools. The event was a success with over 1000 participants from the region. Depending on the curriculum, the students could choose between participation in a dictation either in English, German, Spanish or Italian. One of my tasks was reading the English text and correcting the numerous dictations during the weeks after the event.

In October we participated in an on-arrival seminar week, which took place in beautiful Narbonne in South of France. After the return from sunny and warm Narbonne, the first school interventions started. The main topics of our presentations were introducing our countries, the EVS and/or other mobility programmes within Erasmus+. The activities in schools were generally quite varied since it depended on the ages of the students (we had pupils from 5 to 20 years old). In addition to presentations, we would also do sports activities, cooking our national recipes from home, activities with music and singing (such as teaching a song in our native language and in English), simply talking for language practice, discussing topics such as European history, politics, security threats, future and so on.

November and December passed particularly quickly, because in addition to our presentations in the schools of the region, we also represented our countries and Centre Europe Direct Picardie in European Village (Café de l'Europe) events in Saint-Quentin, Beauvais and Amiens. In December our presentations focused more on the Christmas and New Year’s traditions of our countries. In December we visited the EU Institutions in Brussels with the winners of Ze Dictee; we also visited Lille to meet our representatives in the region of Hauts-de-France.

Despite all the activities, we also had opportunities to travel. In addition to the aforementioned Narbonne and Brussels, I also visited Rouen, Arras, Strasbourg, Lille, Baie de Somme, Étretat, London and of course, Paris on several occasions, since the latter was only 1,5 h away. Naturally, there were many places I would have wanted to visit in addition to that, but I am very content with how much I managed to see and do in such a limited time frame.

However, EVS is not just about the project and the work. From this experience, I will always cherish above all else are the amazing people I had the great fortune to meet. For me, EVS will always be about the cosy dinners we had together with our group, the gripping conversations over wine until late at night (or morning), the music we played and listened together, the parties, the dancing, the troubles and frustrations, the singing (karaoke night, choir, solo, you name it), the trips together, the laughing and crying (often simultaneously), the exhaustion, playing a waltz to an elderly couple while watching them dance and laugh, getting lost, being found again and understanding each other better, being inspired to be better, do better, live and love better thanks to all those shared experiences that shook me and moved me to my core and eventually made me shed quite a few tears. I could go on and on blathering about the amazing people and experiences, but I hesitate to pontificate on something that could never be properly expressed in words as it has to be experienced.

I would like to thank the coordinator of my sending organisation Marco for all the good advice and support. I am very grateful to Centre Europe Direct Picardie (Max, Hédia, Glen and Adeline) for choosing me for this project and for all the help and cooperation during those eclectic 4 months. Last but by no means least, I would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers in the project: Florine, Veronika, Jakob, Mary, Krisztian, Ilona, Johannes, Constantina, Domen, Chiara, Sigrid and Lukáš. Each of you has made a difference in my life and brought me joy, each in your own way. I will always have great fondness for the memories of Amiens and France thanks to the many splendid days spent with you. Thank you for reminding me that life is awesome, people are beautiful and helping me restore some faith in myself. You will be dearly missed in this cold corner of Europe.

EVS Prantsusmaal

Minu EVS leidis aset Põhja-Prantsusmaal, armsas Amiensi linnas.

Be yourself, Proud for Youth Training Course - INTERVIEW WITH TURAL ABDULLA AND LIIS RANDMÄE

Name of the project: Be yourself, Proud for Youth
Date: 08.12.2016 - 15.12.2016
Country/City: Ireland, East Clare

What was the main topic of the event?

Tural: The main topic of the project was LGBT youth and youth work with them. The training covered the issues and challenges LGBT youth face in the daily life and how youth organizations can work to reduce these issues.

Liis: The training was about LGBT+ youth. We were discussing the current situation of LGBT+ people in different countries, the main issues that need to be dealt with concerning the topic and tried to find some ways to actually do so.

What was the biggest learning moments on the event for you?

Tural: Actually, there were a lot of such moments, as we used different methods, such as ‘Theatre of Oppressed’ and ‘Genderbread’… sometimes it was too emotional as some of participants were sharing their life stories. Besides that, the training also helped me to revise project-management, as we are planning to organize training in the future.

Liis: I was really inspired by the people there and learned again that no matter how difficult the life can be (because LGBT+ people as well as any other minority can face enormous obstacles in belonging to the society) there is always hope and we should never give up on that.

Do you have any plans to continue active in the field? If yes, what?

Tural: Definitely! I made some contacts and found some partners who are interested in making a new project. With a partner from the Netherlands we plan to organize a training called ‘Out and proud: How to become allies’ focusing on the topic Gender and Sexuality Diversity, Sexual Health and Education & Advocacy for LGBT youth. Depending on time-management and planning, we are thinking to organize this training either in 2017 or 2018.

Liis: In the end of the training course we started working on our own projects so if all goes well I will hopefully help to organize one youth exchange about sexuality and relationships. The other thing I will always carry with me is to remember to be LGBT+ inclusive in each area of my life in order to create more tolerant society.

Would you recommend it to your friends? I yes, why? If not, why not?

Tural:  Not only this training, generally I encourage all youth to get involved in such projects, because non-formal education is really a life-learning process, you learn totally new skills and methodologies, making new friends and cooperation. It broadens your ways of thinking and gives you keys for different doors. It is all about you, if you want to take this chance and use the opportunity for yourself.

Liis: I would recommend it for sure. Going to a European Union funded training course is SO easy in Estonia and can give more than ever expected. Sometimes the most random conversations with people we didn’t even know existed a few days earlier can be the ones that change our lives the most.

More comments or anything else you would like to share? You can add here in your own language, if you want!

Tural: I am really thankful to Youth for Society for giving me this opportunity. It is one of my best experiences ever. I hope I will actively involve and help to make the world to be the better place for all of us. Çox sağ olun! Gələcək bizlərlə (gənclərlə) gələcək! (Translation; Thanks! The future will come with us (with youth)

Liis: I wish everyone merry Christmas and a happy new year, hope 2017 will be the best so far for all!

EVS: joint venture for fostering social inclusion, active participation and solidarity - VERONIKA JALLAI - 6 MONTHS EVS IN ITALY - English and Russian Article

 EVS IN SICILY

6 warm and beautiful months, that changed me and my life!

All my life I knew I will go for some long volunteering project one day. However, since I was studying there was no time for that. Until I went to work in Tallinn…

I knew Marco, coordinator of my project, from my first experience with Erasmus. It was 5 years ago in Turkey; we had a great youth exchange with what I was really glad. So, when Marco offered me to go for a half of year to Sicily for volunteering only thing that was stopping me a little bit was my work. However, the dream that was all my life following me and confidence about my coordinator offer did not leave me any chance to refuse.

I didn’t have a lot of expectations, I only whished that there would be an opportunity for me to try myself and make something useful for society. Moreover, Sicily itself was an interesting place for a person from the cold region. In addition, it was interesting to meet very close totally new culture …
Preparations for a travel were really in a hurry, but my hosting organization which name is ARCI Strauss is doing very good job. In the Palermo airport I met another participant, girl form Bulgaria, and went together to Mussomeli, our EVS town. Way to Mussomeli is complicated because of transportation problems, but ARCI Strauss director took us from some bus stop and lifted exactly to our big and cosy appeasements…

The first expression was amazing: small medieval town with narrow streets and beautiful mountain view! All the participants and ARCI Strauss workers were so new, but thanks to positive attitude and interesting activities, we got to know each other pretty fast. These people until today make me smile and feel warm inside when I think about them. All in all, during all the project I enjoyed people around me. They helped me, when I was sick or had any other problems or questions; they shared their free time with us and showed Sicily for different sides.

What about my expectations, they were fully satisfied! I felt myself as a part of the city, moreover, the active and useful part of it! We had a lot of tasks that ARCI Strauss gave us to help the local society. Also we had an opportunity to make an initiative. It was never boring and time passed really fast! Now I really hope to see everybody again and just to come back to this charming city, because it became one of my home cities.

I would also like to add, that during the in-arrival and midterm training we met with other volunteers and heard many different feedback about other EVS organizations. Because of that, I could make a conclusion, that I am very lucky with my sending and hosting organizations and I could suggest them to everybody!

ARCI Strauss.

Mentoring: Act for Change TC - INTERVIEW WITH MADLE TIMM

Name of the project: Mentoring: Act for Change
Date: 24th to 30th October 2016
Country/City: Armenia, Toros

What was the main topic of the event?

The main topic of the training was the role of EVS mentors. Each day we learned about the responsibilities of mentors, main tasks etc. We had many interactive examples of different situations what can happen with the volunteer and how to solve the problems. The trainers had a lot of tips from the real life to share in order to be a better mentor.

What were the biggest learning moments on the event for you?

I guess that the biggest learning moments were actually connected with other participants. We had a nice bunch of people from different cultures and backrounds. Everybody shared their own experiences and it was truly interesting to hear and see how different people act and react.

Do you have any plans to continue follow up? If yes, what?

I would like to be a mentor by myself. It seems really an interesting role and there’s no better feeling than seeing that your help really matters for someone.

Would you recommend it to your friends? I yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes I definitely recommend it. Travelling really broadens your mind and if you can connect it with a training and manage to get friends from different countries it’s like an unlimited source afterwards – you can study further from your friend’s experiences while keeping in touch.
